About the Captain
Paul J. Bratti - Chief, US Coast Guard (Ret.)
In 1957, at age 3, Capt. Paul began his “love of the water”, learning to swim and going lobstering with his father in the ocean around Cape Cod’s Hyannis Port. The stage was set for the beginning of a long, enjoyable career on the water. Even as a teenager living in landlocked North Carolina competitive swimming and occasional recreational boating helped ensure that career remained alive.
After graduating high school in 1973 Capt. Paul enlisted in the US Coast Guard. His career consisted of conducting search and rescue operations as a rescue swimmer, rescue boat operator, shipboard duty including aids to navigation, drug interdiction, icebreaking and diving duty in Antarctica. Command duties included being Officer-in-Charge of Coast Guard Station Bayfield concluding in retirement in 1993 after over twenty years of dedicated service.
Capt. Paul then found “employment life after retirement” quite to his liking. After a couple of years captaining several tour boats and various sailboats for a local cruise service and a local sailboat ride business Capt. Paul, in 1997, helped co-found Animaashi Sailing Company. Their sailboat ride business has offered countless half-day, all-day and evening sailing trips over the past 19 years. They plan to continue offering daily sailboat rides among Lake Superior’s beautiful Apostle Islands aboard their 34ft sloop "Sarah’s Joy". So, Come - Sail Away!
Capt. Paul has been married for many years to a wonderful local gal, Joyce Gordon, and has one grown child. Along with his summer sailing business he also works during the school year for the Bayfield School District in special education.
